Construction of a solar carport on the company premises

The principles of sustainability have been continuously pursued at Werner Langer since the company was founded in 1949. Cost efficiency and resource consumption go hand in hand. The waste heat from the machines in the production hall is reused as a heat source in winter, which significantly reduces the energy requirements of the heating system. Basically, managing director Knut Langer says: “If an investment is worthwhile and makes ecological sense, then we will do it – ideally without public funding!”
With this in mind, the company, together with the regional and national energy service provider Outarky, which has moved its headquarters to the Sauerland, planned and built a smart solar carport on the company premises in 2021. The company uses almost all of the just under 30 kWp itself and also operates its own e-charging stations for its own employees and customers. In addition, the system offers weather protection for the vehicles underneath and leaves a positive impression on visitors. There is now a charging station open to the public on the edge of the company premises. The PV system on the carport pays for itself after about four years and the entire project with the carport after about 13 years. This is a relatively long payback period, compared to the payback periods of two to four years otherwise calculated in the industry. Nevertheless, the overall project is worthwhile and contributes to the Langer company's goal of climate neutrality. In the future, additional PV systems are to be built in the company's warehouses and provide further added value for the company and the climate. The company's own employees can charge their own e-bikes using the e-charging stations offered by the company and place them under the solar carport.

In addition to purely technical and business innovations, Werner Langer GmbH & Co. KG also ensures biodiversity by planting trees and maintaining a wildflower meadow on its factory premises. The company has long relied on recycled plastics in its own product range, thereby contributing to a more sustainable supply chain.
